Abstract | This study aimed to evaluate the spectral response of native grasslands under different management techniques, as studies of grassland vegetation with this approach are rare when compared with other vegetation types. The scale of observation and spectral resolution are very important to evaluate this issue. The area considered for this work includes parcels of native grassland (up to 1 ha - with different management techniques) designed for research, from the Department of Zootechny, of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) in Rio Grande do Sul. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of accumulated biomass with the spectral response of grassland plots with different types of management. Reflectance spectra were collected at twenty sampling points considering three parcels of study, using FieldSpec® HandHeld spectroradiometer operating between 400 and 900nm. In six of the twenty evaluated points vegetation was cut for the calculation of aboveground biomass, whereas for the remaining points this variable was visually estimated from measurement data. From the spectral data collected in the field it was possible to compare the differences in reflectance between three plots. Plot 3, with no grazing and hence more accumulated biomass, had the lowest reflectance, result attributed to the higher occurrence of dry/senescent material in the plot. That indicated the importance of considering the phenology of vegetation in such studies. The strongest correlations were found between biomass and near-infrared data for the grazed plots, mainly for plot 2, with less biomass but a higher frequency of prostrate grasses. For the variable vegetation height were found also significant correlations for both grazing plots. For plot 3 (no grazing), the correlations between spectral data and biomass and height were not significant. |
